Hi Everyone!

I’M BACK!!!!  I promised Chad that I would take a break from it all while we were on pre-deployment vacation in the mountains.  Against my will, I even gave up my “traditional” workouts.  Instead, we went hiking, swimming and added 100 pushups and ab plank crunches on opposing days.  While I loved the variety, it reminded me of how much I really do need those scheduled daily workouts with Shaun T and Tony Horton.  Not only am I addicted but I never realized how much my mental health depended on it.  While we were gone I just felt a little sluggish and a tad more anxious and stressed.  Since returning home, we just finished day 4 of P90X (had to switch from the Insanity workouts because I broke my toe and the high impact is killer on it).  Anyway, I feel a million times better.  Yes, it takes a lot of willpower to drag myself out of bed before the kids wake up but it is so worth it. I feel like I can handle anything the kids throw at me…or the military.

This week I want to celebrate the success of my sister-in-law, Nicole (pictured above).  She is what she likes to call a “born again fitness enthusiast.” Meaning, she has “seen the light” and knows what it will take for her to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle.  Now a junior at The Ohio State University (GO BUCKS!), she had gained 30 lbs since high school. The active, in shape, and happy person she once was suddenly became someone she didn’t like seeing in pictures, clothes, and even in the mirror. Recently, reality smacked her in the face after she had a fitness assessment with a personal trainer at a local gym.  She reached out to me for a little guidance.  We jumped started her weight loss with Shakeology and she started with a personal trainer a few times a week at a local gym.  After losing 15 lbs and inches all around, she decided to take it to the next level with P90X.

Boot Camp Fitness and Training

Real Fit Training Boot Camp is a comprehensive fitness program designed to get major results in the shortest and safest amount of time. Small Changes, Big Difference

Hey Everyone!

I finally feel like I am back on track.  I once read this book called “Eat That Frog”.  It’s about tackling your biggest project/commitment first thing in the morning. Turns out that my biggest “frog” is my workout…go figure:)  It weighs on my mind all day until I do it.  So, I pulled myself out of bed this morning at 6AM, before the kids woke up, to “eat my frog”.  I was slow to get going but once I was two minutes into it I was pumped and ready to go.  My INSANITY workout only lasted 35 intense minutes but when I was done I had burned 512 calories, I was dripping sweat, my endorphins were kicking and I felt like a million bucks.  I was ready for the day and anything my kids threw at me.  They say it takes 21 days to develop a habit. So, six days a week for the next 21 days I will be up at 6AM “digging deeper”!

This week I want to celebrate the small changes, the little things we commit to each day that we don’t think are making a difference but add up over time.  Again, my job as a Beachbody coach has led me back to a long time friend of mine.  We go all the way back to kindergarten and girl scouts.  She recently reached out to me with a desire to drop those extra pounds that have slowly crept up on her over the years. I’m all about baby steps.  Doing the little things that you can handle and then building on it. Starting a six day a week workout program and a total diet overhaul all at once is overwhelming.

Turns out she has a habit of relaxing at the end of the day with a couple spoonfuls of peanut butter.  I can totally relate. My night time comfort food is ice cream…LOVE IT!!!  Anyway, I decided to limit myself to one bowl of ice cream a week and I asked her to do the same with her beloved peanut butter. Think about how that can add up.  A couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter and a small glass of milk comes to about 350 calories. No big deal, right…WRONG!  That’s a pound of fat (1 lb of fat = 3500 cal) every ten days.  Just by cutting that out she will lose 1 lb every 10 days.  Think about that….that’s 36 lbs in one year! That’s doesn’t include changing her activity level, food choices or anything.  See, the little things make all the difference!

That brings me to my challenge for you… your small change.  What’s it going to be?  I committed to limiting myself to one bowl of ice cream a week.  Can you cut out a can of pop, a latte from Starbucks®, limit yourself to one trip to the candy machine at work each week, add a nightly family walk after dinner every night, pack your luck 3 days a week for work, do some squats, sit-ups and pushups during the commercials of your nightly TV show, stock your desk draw with healthy snacks, replace one meal with Shakeology®?  What small change can you make that will add up over time and help you reach your health and fitness goals? Snack your way Thin

This is where I have become pretty disciplined over the years. How many of you are guilty of grabbing a few goldfish from your kids plate, a handful of Teddy Grahams out of the cupboard or a bite of mac and cheese your little one left behind?!? That can easily add up to an extra 500 calories throughout the day. Seven days of that and you packed on an extra pound…3 lbs a month  (1lb of fat = 3500cal)! Remember how I said in my last post that the little things we do that we think aren’t making a difference add up over time?  This is one of them!

Having said that, allowing more than three or four hours to pass between meal/snacks puts our body in starvation mode. Every single day I make sure my snacks are planned and purposeful. I eat every 3 hours before my body gets hungry and there is always a source of protein. This keeps me from making bad food choices and ensures my metabolism is working in my favor.

In a snack rut?  Here are some of my favorite go-to snacks. Choose two of these 100-200 calories snacks twice a day to keep your metabolism revved up! And, please don’t hesitate to share your favorite healthy snacks!   • 14 baked tortilla chips and 2 tablespoons of fat-free bean dip ½ cup low-fat cottage cheese and 2/3 cup raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries
